VDE Chemistry Laboratory

Front end customer service

The so-called front end is located in this office area. Here, our employees take care of the customer communication, prepare the feasibility analysis, the calculations and the test plans.

Sample preparation

In preparation for the tests, the submitted materials are processed into samples. For this purpose, the materials are crushed and weighed. The individual tests then take place, e.g. the search for phthalates, the REACH, BFR or PAH tests or the test for freedom from halogens.

Data evaluation

In this office area, the project control takes place, i.e. also the data evaluation and the test report preparation.

Recyclability

Calculation of product-related recycling rates: Our tests provide information on the recyclability of your product. For example, we document compliance with product disassembly requirements in order to meet specific recycling quotas. We also test your product for prescribed dismantling steps to remove critical materials. The evaluation of the individual product allows conclusions to be drawn about the recyclability of the entire product category.

Head space gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

At this point, the qualitative and quantitative determination of volatile SVHC substances (according to the REACH regulation, these are substances with particularly hazardous properties) in plastic samples is carried out.

Product decomposition

To perform the various chemical analyses in our laboratory, it is necessary to dismantle and disassemble the various products. The individual parts are documented with photos and weighed just like the whole product. The disassembly of the equipment is the preparation for the actual sample preparation of the material samples.

Life Cycle Assessment LCA

The VDE Institute prepares a holistic Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of electrical products with a focus on the CO2 value (carbon footprint). We can prepare product-specific CO2 balances. The report is prepared in accordance with PAS2050 and ISO 14040. The basis for this is Directive 2009/125/EC "Ecodesign requirements for energy-related products" (Ecodesign Directive). We evaluate all phases of the product levels production, transport, use and recycling. This provides you with approaches for improving the product structure in accordance with the Ecodesign Directive. Future product generations can be improved by comparing different product concepts. Furthermore, this comprehensive view enables a comparison of different production sites, packaging and transport options.

REACH

The European Chemicals Regulation REACH (1907/2006/EC) regulates the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals.

X-ray fluorescence analysis

X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) is used to qualitatively and quantitatively determine the elemental composition of a sample. Here, the sample preparation, the x,y printed circuit board scan, the point measurement as well as the evaluation (localization chemical elements) takes place.

Micro X-ray fluorescence analysis

With the help of micro X-ray fluorescence analysis µ-XRF, x,y PCB scans, point measurement and specific evaluations for the localization of chemical elements are made possible in our laboratory. For example, it is possible to determine exactly where in the material which elements are located.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry GC/MS

In this test, substances are separated by the gas chromatograph and identified or quantified in the coupled mass spectrometer. This is where the liquid injection and the evaluation of the results occur.

RoHS compliance

The RoHS Directive 2011/65/EC on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances requires a declaration of conformity and CE marking. The conformity assessment procedure is the responsibility of the manufacturer and includes the preparation of the required technical documentation and internal production control, in accordance with Module A of Decision 768/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council on a common framework for the marketing of products. The following products are affected by the restrictions, such as vending machines, household appliances, electrical tools, toys, or medical devices.

Röntgenfluoreszenzanalyse

X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) is a convenient decomposition-free (process in which poorly soluble substances are converted into an acidic or water-soluble compound) and interference-free method for the qualitative and quantitative determination of homogeneous materials.

X-ray fluorescence analysis RFA-XL

X-ray fluorescence analysis XRF-XL is used for automated analyses of homogeneous materials. Here, sample preparation as well as the evaluation of the results are also performed by our highly qualified staff.

Chemistry and sustainability

Environmental protection targets and substance-related legal requirements apply worldwide. These are the basics that manufacturers and distributors must follow in product development. In addition to the reduction and avoidance of pollutants, the sustainability of electrical products is of great importance. Furthermore, energy consumption, material selection in product design, and the processes of manufacturing and recycling are decisive for the CO2 emissions of the product in its life cycle.
